Wood or Aluminum: Specifying Windows for Luxury Mountain Environments

In high-altitude, high-exposure mountain construction, window material selection carries structural, thermal, and aesthetic consequences that last decades. Here is how we think through the decision.

The window specification question that surfaces most consistently across our Mountain West projects is not about profile geometry or glazing configuration — it is about material. Wood or aluminum. Both are legitimate answers. Neither is universal. The built environment at elevation demands that specifiers understand the trade-offs before the decision lands in a set of construction documents.

The Case for Wood

Solid wood windows remain the dominant choice when the interior expression is the priority. In lodge-adjacent residential work — heavy timber structure, stone, natural plaster — a precision-milled wood frame reads as part of the architecture rather than an interruption of it. Our master fabricators work in species selected for dimensional stability and grain character: white oak, alder, sapele, and Douglas fir among them. The result is a profile with genuine materiality, not a veneer over an engineered substrate.

The relevant performance consideration at altitude is moisture cycling. Mountain sites compress seasonal extremes: wide temperature swings, low humidity interiors in winter, driving rain and UV exposure in summer. Wood frames that are not properly specified — correct species, correct finish system, correct joinery at sill and head — will move, and eventually fail. This is not an argument against wood; it is an argument for specifying it correctly. Prefinished exterior surfaces with penetrating oil or catalyzed urethane systems, combined with proper site drainage and overhangs, address the exposure problem directly.

For interior-facing surfaces, wood offers something aluminum simply cannot: the warmth and acoustic softness that reads as luxury in a mountain context. Profiles can be fully custom — rebate depth, sight line width, casing integration — fabricated to match the surrounding millwork package. That coordination between window surround and interior trim is one of the stronger arguments for sourcing both through a single fabrication relationship.

The Case for Aluminum

Aluminum wins on dimensional consistency and long-term exterior performance. Where the specification calls for minimal sight lines, floor-to-ceiling glazed walls, or very large fixed lites, aluminum's structural efficiency per millimeter of profile depth is difficult to match in wood. The frame can be thinner relative to its span, and it will not move.

Contemporary mountain architecture — concrete, corten, large-format stone, flat or low-slope roofs — frequently calls for aluminum precisely because the frame should recede. A thermally broken aluminum profile in a dark architectural finish becomes a non-event at the wall plane, allowing the view and the glazing to carry the composition.

Maintenance is the operational argument. Aluminum does not require periodic refinishing. For second-home and resort-adjacent projects where owner presence is seasonal and maintenance staffing is limited, that matters to the developer and ultimately to the end client. Powder-coat finishes in custom RAL or NCS selections hold color and sheen without the refinishing cycles that exterior wood demands.

Aluminum also scales. When a project calls for repetitive openings across a large facade — a multi-unit development, a resort amenity building — the tolerance consistency of extruded aluminum simplifies installation coordination in ways that wood cannot replicate at volume.

Where the Decision Actually Lives

In practice, most premium mountain projects we specify for do not choose one material exclusively. The resolved approach tends to be: aluminum on exposed, high-wind, or large-span elevations where performance and maintenance predictability drive the decision; wood on interior-facing or protected elevations where materiality and millwork integration matter most.
